Leak Rate Through a Hole
The steam, water, air or gas escaping through a hole, crack or orifice — and what it costs in a year.
Inputs
Leak rate
22.38kg/h
Flow regime
Choked flow — sonic at the hole. Lowering the back pressure does NOT increase the leak (critical ratio 0.577).
Details
| Annual loss | 179 t/yıl |
| Hole area | 7.069e-6 m² |
| Discharge coefficient Cd | 0.610 |
| Velocity at the hole | 454.6 m/s |
| Upstream density | 5.145 kg/m³ |
| Normal volume flow (0 °C, 1.013 bar) | — m³/h |
Assumptions
- Cd comes from the hole SHAPE, not the fluid. A sharp edge contracts the jet; a corrosion hole is lower still.
- Saturated steam is taken as DRY at the hole. Wet steam gives a somewhat higher mass flow.
- If the hole cannot be measured this is an upper bound, not a measurement — the error in diameter is squared.
